- Pump – A malfunctioning pump in your power steering will instantly wake you up! A screeching noise being emitted from a failing power steering pump is immediately noticeable to the driver of the vehicle, as well as anyone else near the vehicle.
- Belt – When power steering belts become worn, cracked or dried, you may start feeling some shaking in the steering wheel when you go to make a turn. It’s possible you’ll get that ear-splitting screeching sound here as well. - Fluid – You should regularly check your power steering fluid to be sure that the level never gets too low. When the fluid reaches critical low levels, it can affect the rack and pinion system that provides high-pressure fluid to the pump. This can cause your steering wheel to become rather hard to turn.
- Leaks – Leaks in the line connected to the pump may happen if the rubber hoses get dried out from the high temperatures created by your car’s engine. A leak can also happen in the pump itself and drip onto the power steering belt.
You can perform some minor auto repair to help fix your leak problem by replacing the lines yourself, if you are able to do so.
