If you’re not a fan of taking your car to the auto repair shop because you believe it will lead to new set of expensive repairs… then read this!

There are some auto repairs are absolutely necessary to get right away but oftentimes, there are other repairs that you can afford to put on hold for a while longer. This list below can help to shed some light on what items should be fixed right away and what can wait until a later time.

Auto Repair: What Can and Can’t Wait 

1. Mufflers:

Mufflers often develop small holes due to corrosion, with them you may have possibly heard a louder exhaust sound coming from the back end of your vehicle. Get some muffler tape, which you can find at most auto supply stores, to wrap around these holes. You should also drive with your car windows cracked a bit for better ventilation, just to be safe. This quick DIY fix is a good option as a temporary fix, but it is still important to see an auto repair expert for muffler repair or replacement in the near future. 

2. Hoses and Belts:

With the exception of your car’s timing best, most vehicle hoses and belts can last approximately four years or roughly 50,000 miles. 

It’s a good idea to replace most hoses and belts between every six to eight years to be safe. However, if a hose pops or a belt breaks, it’s important to get it replaced right away, before it has the opportunity to lead to potentially extensive engine damage.

3. Shock Absorbers and Struts:

The majority of struts and shock absorbers can last for quite a long time. If you have just started experiencing a slight shimmy, chances are it’s OK to wait a bit before you get these parts replaced. You can always stop in to an auto repair facility, if you want to get a check to be sure it’s not a sign of a bigger issue.

4. Leaks

If you find that your transmission is leaking oil at a rate of a quart for every 1,000 miles it does not qualify as a major concern. Alternatively, if your car has is exhibiting a serious oil leak, you should take it into an auto repair center right away.

There are some repairs that are not as critical as others. For obvious safety reasons, when your have a vehicle issue in regards to brakes, steering systems, timing belts and water pumps, it is important that those issues be addressed as soon as possible.
